Virtual Grounds (VG) is a pioneer in delivering historical, educational, and cultural content through cutting-edge digital solutions. With a commitment to creating immersive experiences, VG develops innovative technology that bridges the gap between history, culture, and modern technology.
When the U.S. Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island Museum sought to design an interactive exhibit highlighting the pivotal role of drill sergeants in Marine recruit training, Virtual Grounds faced a unique challenge. They needed a partner who could bring their vision to life by fabricating and installing a custom-made wood kiosk. This kiosk had to be securely fixed to the floor, accommodate an 86-inch touchscreen display, and allow for easy access to the equipment inside. Additionally, it needed to be installed on-site at the museum.
Enter THS Woodcrafters, the solution to Virtual Grounds’ challenge. The THS Woodcrafters team embarked on the journey to create an elegant and functional wooden kiosk. This impressive structure measures 90 inches in height and 56 inches in width, boasting a durable light gray, pre-catalyzed lacquer finish designed to withstand the wear and tear expected from thousands of museum visitors.
One of the key features of the kiosk was the multi-latch, lockable door on the side. This door allowed technicians to access the hardware and audio equipment with ease, ensuring smooth maintenance and troubleshooting when needed. THS Woodcrafters went the extra mile by coordinating equipment tests with manufacturers to guarantee seamless integration and operation of all elements within the kiosk.
Once the kiosk passed internal and Virtual Grounds’ approval, the THS Woodcrafters team took on the responsibility of transporting it, along with the equipment, to Parris Island. On-site, they meticulously installed the kiosk and provided comprehensive assistance to VG and museum officials regarding the exhibit.
The Parris Island Museum hailed the “drill instructor exhibit” as a resounding success. This interactive exhibit offered museum attendees the opportunity to learn the intricacies of Marine recruit training, including how to stand for formation, where to place their hands and feet, to maintain eye contact, and how to interact with fellow Marines. It was quickly dubbed “a hit.”
Virtual Grounds recognized the kiosk as an “impressive piece” of technology. They particularly appreciated the meticulous attention given to safeguarding the equipment’s controls and manuals. The comprehensive testing conducted by THS Woodcrafters on the digital equipment inside the kiosk proved productive and invaluable, helping VG evaluate their programming work for future projects.
Impressed by the “exceptional fabrication services” provided by THS Woodcrafters, Virtual Grounds commended their professionalism and expertise. THS Woodcrafters not only accommodated changes but also offered insightful contributions and feedback throughout the project. This collaborative spirit ensured the successful delivery and installation of the kiosk.
In conclusion, Virtual Grounds expressed their eagerness to continue their partnership with THS Woodcrafters on future fabrication projects. Together, they have demonstrated how creativity, innovation, and craftsmanship can combine to create memorable and educational experiences that leave a lasting impact on museum attendees. The drill instructor exhibit stands as a testament to the power of collaboration in bringing history and culture to life through technology and craftsmanship.
